Health and Safety in Construction

Health and Safety in Construction

Employees & contractors of small and medium sized building companies are those at most risk of injury and ill health on site and suffer the majority of construction related fatalities each year. Most deaths are and a result from falls from height including: ladders, scaffolds, working platforms, roof edges, and falls through fragile roofs or roof lights.

Other hazards commonly associated with the construction industry include vehicle and plant movement, slip & trips, manual handling and harm associated with exposure to hazardous substances. The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 place specific duties on anyone involved in construction work; both commercial and domestic to manage such risks

Our consultants can provide the following services

Under The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 all projects will require a Construction Phase Plan which must be completed before any work on site begins.

The construction phase plan is the foundation for good management and determines:

  • Who does what
  • Who is responsible for what
  • The hazards and risks involved
  • How the site works are going to be controlled

As well as assisting you with completing the plan, as its viewed as a live document our health and safety consultants will ensure that it is reviewed at regular intervals, and amended to reflect changes in the scope of work.

A risk assessment is the overall process of identifying all the risks to and from an activity and assessing the potential impact of each risk. In terms of construction this would involve our health and safety consultants assessing the activities you undertake e.g. work at height, lifting building materials, use of plant and equipment, and ensuring suitable and practical control measures are implemented that both reduce the risks to your employees and others, and allow you to complete the job in hand with minimum disruption.

Method statements are a further extension of a risk assessment and are a step-by-step plan of how you intend to complete a specified piece of work; whilst also considering the risks throughout all elements of the job. Method statements were initially designed for high-risk activities that had to be completed in a periodic manner with designated safety measures in place, however it has now become commonplace for sub-contractors to supply them to principal contractors or organisations they are working for as part of their health and safety due diligence procedures.

Our health and safety consultants can devise a program of planned site inspections to be undertaken over the duration of the project to help contractors ensure that site procedures and safety measures are being suitably followed and the organisation remains legally compliant.

If you need help to get on the CHAS, Safe Contractor, EXOR or other similar pre vetting health and safety schemes then our health and safety consultants can take you through the entire process.
